Donald Trump FINALLY Fires Dayana Mendoza

Dayana Mendoza may have been a Miss Universe, but Donald Trump finally fired her from Celebrity Apprentice last night. After another grueling Board Room show down between Dayana and Lisa Lampanelli, The Donald had had enough. This, despite the fact that bot Lisa and Clay Aikens argued that Dayana did very little in this week?s task of writing a jingle for the Good Sam organization. Once again, the so-called ?creative? talents of Lisa and Clay fell short, but they live to fight another day. Meanwhile, Aubrey O?Day managed to help Arsenio Hall win the task, despite his initial rejection of her game-winning suggestions. Donald Trump may think the world of former Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza, but he still was forced to fire her from Celebrity Apprentice. Image Credit: Ivan Nikolov / Wenn.com. The fun begins with Trump telling both teams about this week?s task of creating a 90-second long jingle to promote the Good Sam cell phone app. Arsenio and Dayana are the Project Managers while Ivanka and Don Jr. are daddy?s viceroys. Right away things get dicey for Team Forte when Dayana asks Clay and Lisa if the jingle must be like a Christmas song? Jingle Bells, Dayana smells, [...]

The TechCrunch Meet-Up In NYC Is Officially Official: RSVP Now

NYC_Times_SquareAs the days pass, the big moment draws nigh. No, I'm not talking about Disrupt, which is a big moment in its own right, nor am I teasing any other big launch. I'm talking about a party. A huge party. We initially called it a mini meet-up ? a gathering of New York's tech startup scene, including investors, entrepreneurs and TechCrunch editorial ? but its grown into so much more than that. With over 600 RSVPs, ten sponsors, a badass venue, and more TC staff in attendance than we'd originally expected, our mini meet-up is now massive.

Foxconn Profit Down As Scrutiny Forces Corporate Changes

scaledwm-img_3792Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Foxconn saw its profits fall to $509 million from $1.19 billion last quarter. Chairman Terry Gou said this quarter was particularly affected by Foxconn's recent image problem. Improvements in wages, worker benefits, and education accounted for some of the loss, although new iPad and iPhone 4S manufacturing bolstered income last quarter. As a reaction to recent popular criticism on various fronts, the company increased wages by 25 percent this year and is planning to open a hospital and language schools for its employees.

Coldplay, Rihanna's Official 'Princess Of China' Video Due In May

Rihanna-starring clip currently making the rounds is actually taken from Coldplay's live show, spokesperson confirms.

By now, you've probably seen the video for Coldplay's "Princess of China." It stars Rihanna as a Shiva-esque deity who waves her (many) arms back and forth in time with the tune but strangely does not actually feature Coldplay themselves.

The clip began making the rounds earlier this week and was not only touted as the "official video" but earned raves from fans of both acts. There's only one problem: It is most definitely not the actual "Princess of China" vid.

In fact, it's part of Coldplay's live show, a video they play during their performance of the song (as several Coldplay aficionados have been pointing out on YouTube). Just to clear up any confusion, we reached out to a spokesperson for the band, who told us in no uncertain terms: "It isn't the official video. ... It is, in fact, a clip that the band are using during their performance of the song on tour."

So there you have it. Of course, this raises the question of just when the real "Princess of China" video will premiere. After all, going by photos RiRi previously tweeted, the clip was filmed back in March. So, once again, we went to Coldplay's rep, who told us that the "Princess" video is still a few weeks away from debuting.

"It won't be finished until the third week of May," the spokesperson said. "It's going to be a minute."

Quick quiz: which consumes more power, an "energy-efficient" 55-inch LED TV, or the 90-foot "Patterned by Nature" video installation at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences? It's actually a trick question, because the sculpture does eat less power -- just 75 watts -- but then it only has a fraction of the TV's pixels. Each of its 3600 "dots" is in fact a 6-inch glass pane which can vary its transparency, a decidedly more lo-fi approach than similar tech we've seen before, but no less arresting as a result. As the video shows, it combines an eight channel soundtrack with twenty Mario-like animations on its serpentine skin -- ranging from bacteria to flocking geese -- to bring mother nature to the viewer without sapping her energy.

Eagle Scouts have positive, lasting influence on American society, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Apr. 10, 2012) ? One hundred years after Arthur Eldred of New York earned the first Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America, researchers with Baylor University's Institute for Studies of Religion (ISR) and Program on Prosocial Behavior have released findings from a U.S. nationwide, scientific survey that demonstrates the significant, positive impact Eagle Scouts have on society every day.

"There is no shortage of examples or anecdotal accounts that suggest Scouting produces better citizens, but now there is scientific evidence to confirm the prosocial benefits of Scouting or earning the rank of Eagle Scout," said the study's principal investigator, Byron R. Johnson, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor of the Social Sciences, director of the Program on Prosocial Behavior and ISR co-director. "The central question of this study was to determine if achieving the rank of Eagle Scout is associated with prosocial behavior and development of character that carries over into young adulthood and beyond."

With funding from a major two-year research grant from the John Templeton Foundation, Baylor researchers with ISR's Program on Prosocial Behavior partnered with the Gallup Organization to conduct a nationwide random survey of 2,512 adult males.

Sung Joon Jang, Ph.D., associate professor of sociology, Baylor ISR Faculty Fellow and co-principal investigator, said analyses were conducted to see whether three groups of survey respondents -- Eagle Scouts, Scouts who did not achieve the Eagle Scout rank, and non-Scouts -- differed in responses to a series of survey questions related to the following topics:

  • Well-being (survey questions dedicated to recreational activities, emotional well-being, relational well-being and physical well-being)
  • Civic engagement (survey items focusing on membership in formal and informal groups, community donations, community volunteering, community problem-solving, environmental stewardship, political participation and civic leadership)
  • Character development (survey statements asking about commitment to learning, goal orientation, planning/preparedness, self-efficacy, activities with neighbors, accountability, moral attitudes, openness to diversity, civic attitudes and spirituality)

The Baylor study found that Eagle Scouts -- compared to Scouts who never attained the rank of Eagle Scout and men who were never Scouts -- were significantly more likely to:

  • Exhibit higher levels of participation in a variety of health and recreational activities, such as regular exercise, outdoor recreation, attending plays and live theater, reading books, playing a musical instrument and visiting a local, state or national park,
  • Show a greater connection to siblings, neighbors, religious community, friends, coworkers, formal and informal groups and a spiritual presence in nature,
  • Share a greater belief in duty to God, service to others, service to the community and leadership, such as donating money within the last month to a religious or non-religious organization or charity, reporting volunteer time with a religious or non-religious organizations, working with neighbors to address a problem or improve something, voting in the last presidential election and holding leadership positions at a workplace or local community),
  • Engage in behaviors that are designed to enhance and protect the environment, such as being active in a group that works to protect the environment, avoiding the use of certain products that harm the environment and using less water in their households,
  • Be committed to setting and achieving personal, professional, spiritual and financial goals
  • Show higher levels of planning and preparedness, such as having a disaster supply kit in their home and emergency supplies in their car, designating a specific meeting place for family during an emergency and being CPR certified and
  • Indicate that they have built character traits related to work ethics, morality, tolerance and respect for diversity, such as always exceeding people's expectations and doing what is right, working hard to get ahead, treating people of other religions with respect, strongly agreeing that most religions make a positive contribution to society, stating that respecting religious leaders outside of their religions is somewhat important and showing respect to the American flag

Podcast Basics For Westlake Village MLM Business Bloggers

Today?s Westlake Village direct selling article is for Westlake Village internet rookies who want to kick up their web marketing a notch by adding a podcast to their Westlake Village home business blog.

A podcast is a multimedia file that is downloaded for playback on a mobile device such as an iPod or laptop computer. It can be a digital recording of a radio program or, more often, a program produced solely for online distribution. A podcast can be a recording of a webcast: a live Westlake Village program that is ?streamed? or broadcast on the internet in real time. When this is the case, it is similar to a DVD recording of a live program that you store in the database of your playback device.

A related term is the acronym RSS which probably originally stood for Rich Site Summary feed but is sometimes used for Really Simple Syndication. You have probably seen the term RSS on websites. An RSS feed allows digital files to be downloaded in a standard format. Agoura Hills podcast listeners often subscribe to favorite ongoing podcasts. When new podcasts are produced, they are automatically downloaded by RSS applications.

It is fairly simple hardware- and software-wise to product your own podcast for your Westlake Village online business
. Your laptop may already have recording capability. If not, you can buy any equipment you need in the Agoura Hills area.

Westlake Village business owners operating on a shoestring will be happy to know that basic recording and editing software can be downloaded for free. If you want to get fancy, you can always buy more sophisticated software at California specialty computer stores. I recommend using a headset microphone so the mic is always in the right spot to get a clear and consistent recording.

Now the fun part: what will you podcast? The possibilities are endless for Westlake Village direct marketers. You can record California trade show presentations, interviews with founding distributors of your Westlake Village direct sales company, or create an entertaining pitch about your Agoura Hills business opportunity. Let your expertise and enthusiasm shine.

Creating a podcast gives you a chance to connect with potential Westlake Village customers or downline members in a personal way.

Abbott supports his gay sister, but not gay marriage | MGN: Miami ...

The Australian Opposition leader Tony Abbott reaffirmed his disagreement with same-sex marriage yesterday, quashing hopes by campaigners of a change of heart in the wake of revelations that his sister, Christine Forster, is in a gay relationship.

Forster spoke about her private life for the first time at the weekend, saying Abbott had been supportive when she quit her long-standing marriage after falling in love with her present partner, Virginia Edwards, four years ago.

But the Coalition leader told reporters he had no intention of reconsidering his position on gay partnerships, or of allowing his MPs a free vote on the issue.

Referring to his sister, a mother of four, he said: ?We?ve had many interesting discussions, we?ll keep those dis-cussions going, but fundamentally I want to be a politician that keeps my commitments. We went into the election with a position; as far as I?m concerned that?s the position we?ll keep.?

Forster and Edwards had sought to keep their relationship private, but were photographed together last year brandishing placards in support of gay marriage at an event at the Sydney Opera House.

In a statement to the Weekend Australian, Forster said: ?In response to the media interest ? I?ve decided to publicly confirm that I am gay and am in a committed, live-in relationship with Virginia.?

Abbott had tried to shield his sister from the media glare, according to the magazine, remaining silent even when same-sex marriage activists urged him to ?get to know? some gay people. He paid tribute to Forster yesterday, saying: ?She?s had some very difficult and complex issues to deal with, and I really admire the way she?s handled it ? with courage and authenticity.?

Campaigners said the revelations were cause for optimism. ?Advocacy from loved ones is by far the most effective way of changing hearts and minds,? said Alex Greenwich, spokesman for Australian Marriage Equality. ?Ms Forster proves this issue is about family, love, equality and not politics. It gives us hope that there is someone at the Abbott dinner table putting the case forward for same-sex marriage.?

Senthorun Raj, senior policy adviser to the New South Wales Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby, called on Abbott to allow Coalition MPs a conscience vote when the issue goes to the federal Parliament. It was plain, he said, ?the issue of marriage equality cuts across a range of families and communities in Australia?.

Forster and Edwards were married when they met through the school their sons attend. Abbott was ?absolutely flabbergasted? when Forster?s marriage ended, he told the Weekend Australian, because he thought she had a ?fantastic partnership?.

However, he went on: ?For Chris, it was replaced by something else that is marvellous. She did something brave, authentic ? I can respect that even if I can?t in every sense understand it ? I?ve come to the view over the years the only side you can take is that which tries to maintain relationships. Getting judgmental in ways which damage relationships does no one any good.?

At the Opera House, Forster held a placard stating: ?I love her! Marry me????, while Edwards had a sign that said: ?And I love her. Live with it!?

Abbott and his wife, staunch Catholics, have ?warmly welcomed? Edwards to the family, says Forster.

Study ties oil, gas production to Midwest quakes

(AP) ? Oil and gas production may explain a sharp increase in small earthquakes in the nation's midsection, a new study from the U.S. Geological Survey suggests.

The rate has jumped six-fold from the late 20th century through last year, the team reports, and the changes are "almost certainly man-made."

Outside experts were split in their opinions about the report, which is not yet published but is due to be presented at a meeting later this month.

The study said a relatively mild increase starting in 2001 comes from increased quake activity in a methane production area along the state line between Colorado and New Mexico. The increase began about the time that methane production began there, so there's a "clear possibility" of a link, says lead author William Ellsworth of the USGS.

The increase over the nation's midsection has gotten steeper since 2009, due to more quakes in a variety of oil and gas production areas, including some in Arkansas and Oklahoma, the researchers say.

It's not clear how the earthquake rates might be related to oil and gas production, the study authors said. They note that others have linked earthquakes to injecting huge amounts of leftover wastewater deep into the earth.

There has been concern about potential earthquakes from a smaller-scale injection of fluids during a process known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, which is used to recover gas. But Ellsworth said Friday he is confident that fracking is not responsible for the earthquake trends his study found, based on prior studies.

The study covers a swath of the United States that lies roughly west of Ohio and east of Utah. It counted earthquakes of magnitude 3 and above.

Magnitude 3 quakes are mild, and may be felt by only a few people in the upper floors of buildings, or may cause parked cars to rock slightly. The biggest counted in the study was a magnitude-5.6 quake that hit Oklahoma last Nov. 5, damaging dozens of homes. Experts said it was too strong to be linked to oil and gas production.

The researchers reported that from 1970 to 2000, the region they studied averaged about 21 quakes a year. That rose to about 29 a year for 2001 through 2008, they wrote, and the three following years produced totals of 50, 87 and 134, respectively.

The study results make sense and are likely due to man-made stress in the ground, said Rowena Lohman, a Cornell University geophysicist.

"The key thing to remember is magnitude 3s are really small," Lohman said. "We've seen this sort of behavior in the western United States for a long time."

Usually, it's with geothermal energy, dams or prospecting. With magnitude 4 quakes, a person standing on top of them would at most feel like a sharp jolt, but mostly don't last long enough to be a problem for buildings, she said.

The idea is to understand how the man-made activity triggers quakes, she said. One possibility is that the injected fluids change the friction and stickiness of minerals on fault lines. Another concept is that they change the below-surface pressure because the fluid is trapped and builds, and then "sets off something that's about ready to go anyway," Lohman said.

But another expert was not convinced of a link to oil and gas operations.

Austin Holland, the Oklahoma state seismologist, said the new work presents an "interesting hypothesis" but that the increase in earthquake rates could simply be the result of natural processes.

Holland said clusters of quakes can occur naturally, and that scientists do not yet fully understand the natural cycles of seismic activity in the central United States. Comprehensive earthquake records for the region go back only a few decades, he said, while natural cycles stretch for tens of thousands of years. So too little is known to rule out natural processes for causing the increase, he said.
